young author's day history
our yad History
Young Authors Day was originated over 30 years ago by Eastgate teacher Carol Langhurst to encourage and celebrate literacy, creative writing and reading in Eastgate students. For twelve years she was the driving force behind Young Authors Day and with the support of the Eastgate teachers, staff and parent community it has continued to be a highlight of the year for Eastgate families.
Each spring every child at Eastgate writes and illustrates their own book. Each student receives a blank hardcover book to complete.
On Young Authors Day students would be separated into a small group of multi-age students that will participate in book sharing, a drama performance, and participate in an interactive presentation by the Featured Author. Multi-aged groups were formed to allow the younger students see what their writing can become. After the morning of activities, the students and families enjoy a school-wide BBQ lunch! The fun filled day took many hours of volunteer work, teacher participation and whole lot of organization!
