What is the Discover Dance Program?
In this program, Pacific Northwest Ballet opens their stage to our school, and several others, for special performances. Grades participating from the collection of schools range from 3rd grade through 8th grade. The Eastgate PTA offers this program to our 4th grade students each year. Each school selects a specific theme for their performance
and has many practices with the PNB choreographer prior to the big event.
PNB's DISCOVER DANCE program provides standards-based dance education to schools that otherwise offer little or no dance instruction. Instruction takes place during the school day and supports classroom goals by integrating other subjects into dance classes. During the course of the program, students have the opportunity to explore dance making and performance by participating in PNB’s DISCOVER DANCE Community Performance.
Every year the 4th graders go on a field trip that has 3 parts. Mother of one of the students' that participated in the field trip in 2014-2015 year explains those parts: "There were three parts to the field trip and we were broken up by class. We got a chance to observe professional dancers warming up and practicing, we got to see, touch and talk about the incredible costumes that are part of the productions and the kids had a chance to create their own dance and talk to a couple professional dancers."
The Discover Dance program attempts to tie in some portion of the school curriculum in the dances. This year's performance focuses on math, the year before was science.
The Review Process: "PNB participates in regular program evaluation of DISCOVER DANCE. Evaluation is based on student assessments, teacher feedback, and alignment with state arts standards. During the 2008-2009 school year PNB piloted a new student assessment plan and evaluation process. The report on this pilot, including program goals, student achievement, and assessment tools, is now available." (from the PNB website)
"There were several things that struck me as the kids were engaged in the review; first was the level of exposure and introduction to a common language of the arts and an artistic medium that most kids would never have the opportunity to understand. It left me feeling that somewhere there was a level of acceptance and appreciation; and that someday, some of these kids, who may otherwise not have been interested, will explore attending a fine arts production on their own because they have been given an opportunity to understand and appreciate the details." (from a parent involved in the review and program)
